Have you ever received a marriage proposal - a serious one? How did you feel? What did you say? Here is a little surprise: in Isaiah 54 you can listen to someone making you a marriage proposal. And guess what? The person making the proposal is God. "For your maker is your Husband, the Lord of hosts is his name.....for a brief moment I deserted you, but with great compassion I will gather you. In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you..." Actually its not so much a proposal of marriage, as a promise of restoration of a marriage. Cos God's people have repeatedly rejected him for idols, repeatedly disobeyed him to his face and treated him with contempt. So God for a brief moment deserted his unfaithful people.....But now here he is embracing them, and promising to love them forever. That's God's re-proposal. And like any decent proposal - there are precious stones and jewels involved:
"O afflicted one, storm tossed and not comforted....I will set your stones in antimony, and lay your foundations with sapphires."
I don't know if you have ever thought of God as a husband to us at Unichurch (it can feel a bit weird!). But I would encourage you to let it sink in. We all have dreams of who we might marry (and whether the people we would like to marry would ever actually want to marry us). Isaiah 54 tells us we are not dreaming big enough - cos here is the miracle of all miracles. The God of the universe wants to be married to us.
