Sometimes I think we forget what an extraordinary work God is doing in the world today through his gospel. Throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st century the gospel has spread through previously unreached parts of the world like wildfire. India, Africa, South America and China have all been hugely impacted, with literally hundreds of millions of new christians. It is a truly astonishing phenomenom. This has often happened in the face of fierce opposition from the state and the local populace - and yet the gospel has advanced. Unstoppably.
But it has not been without cost. Countless missionaries have been sent out, leaving families, relationships, homes behind. Lots of them were killed or died of sickness. And all of these missionaries were dependent on the sacrificial prayerful support of local churches (like St Judes) back home. This is how God has changed the world.
This Sunday we are going to be reminded by Dr Wei Han Kuan from CMS Victoria of the importance of our partnership with those sent out to take the gospel to the ends of the earth. We will be hearing about the need to suffer with othem; to pray for them; to love them; and to support them financially. And there will be opportunites to respond in action not just in words.
See you there.
