MARK 14:1-11: GOD SUPREME

Over the next 7 weeks we are going to be finishing our series in Mark’s gospel. This Sunday in Mark 14:1-11, we will see a woman spend $50,000 dollars in 10 seconds in order to worship Jesus Christ. There is a lot of that you could do with $50,000: you could save the lives of a lot of children; you could feed 500 families for a month in parts of the developing world. But she decided to spend it simply showing Jesus how much she loved him. This is a challenging passage in all kinds of ways...but at its heart it will help us to see just how much God values his only Son Jesus. And that is something worth seeing.

EPHESIANS 4:17-5:1 SWAPPING SELVES

Chapter 4 is a bit of a turning point in Ephesians. Having spent 3 chapters telling the Ephesians who they are, and what God has made them through Jesus, Paul now starts to tell them the difference this makes in their day to day lives. And he uses a powerful image to make his point: “Put off your old way of life, and clothe yourselves with the new self”. I don’t know if you have ever thought of your way of life and your character as clothes that you need to take off or put on. My four year old son is currently learning how to take off his old clothes and put on new ones...and he finds it really difficult. How much harder will it be for us to take off a life, and put on a new one. So here is a thought to encourage you. Paul says this: “clothe yourself with your new self, created in the likeness of God.” The new self you are putting on is not just any old self - it’s a new self that looks just like God; that behaves as he does; that loves what he loves; and hates what he hates. So here is a question to think about - would you be willing to trade in your old life and character and get back a life and a character that looks just like God’s? If the answer is yes - then you should enjoy this Sunday.

KNOWING THE LOVE OF CHRIST

Last week in chapter 2 of Ephesians, we learnt that God has made his people into his temple. This is an astonishing truth, which Paul builds on in this week’s passage. In Ephesians 3, Paul prays that God would “fill us (his temple) with all of his fullness”.  And this is a familiar idea in the bible: when Solomon built the temple for the first time in 1 Kings 8, God filled his temple visibly with his presence. So Paul is praying that God would do the same thing today, in us! And he also tells us how this will happen: it happens as we come to know the “love of Christ that surpasses knowledge”. So why not pray Paul’s pray for yourself every day this week? Here it is:

“I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18 I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

IMMEASURABLE POWER & GRACE

Do you remember as a child ever falling down and hurting yourself, and your Dad picking you up in his arms (apparently effortlessly), and sitting you down beside him to comfort you? It made me think my Dad was amazing, because not only was he so strong, but he was using his great strength to love me! So have you ever wondered how strong God is? And how he has used his strength to love you? Ephesians 2 is a place you can see God in action. Listen to what Paul says:

“When we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with Christ - by grace you have been saved - and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 2:5-6

What Paul is teaching us here is so astonishing, its really important to understand it clearly: God created a real spiritual union between you and Christ the moment you believed in him, when he gave you the Spirit of Christ to live in you. At that point, Christ’s immortality became yours; and in the spiritual realms, his place of power and authority at God’s right hand also became yours. Its an extraordinary picture if you think about it. It means when God raised Jesus from death, he also raised more than a billion Christians (and the number is still growing) out of the grip of death and evil, and sat them down beside him in heaven. That’s how strong God is. And thats also how kind God is. That in one act he could raise more than a billion of his children from death to immortality. This is just some of the stuff we will be thinking about on Sunday. How could you miss it?
